The Legacy of the Byzantine Empire Resurfaces in the City of Constantinople
The Legacy of the Byzantine Empire Resurfaces in the City of ConstantinopleWhen did the Byzantine Empire revive the Roman Empire and create a legacy of its own? The answer lies in the Byzantine city of Constantinople. Located at the foot of the mountain slopes of the Balkans, this great city was long considered an island in the Mediterranean Sea.The Crusaders did not see it that way. In order to further their conquests, they called this city Constantinople and made the short drive through the mountain passes to reach the capital city, where the Byzantine Emperor wanted to be.The people who live here today trace their origins back for centuries. They are still proud of the different religions and ethnic groups that call the western part of the country home. These Christian structures were built during the early medieval times when the Byzantines were among the most respected leaders in the world. However, due to the Arab and Turkish domination over this region, the architectural styles in the region changed. During this time, the Byzantine Empire used to be quite prosperous but was brought down by the Arabs.Under the leadership of Caliph Al-mayr (Abu Suleyman), the empire managed to recapture its territory. By doing so, the Byzantine empire managed to regain its lost glory and become one of the richest and most powerful countries in the world. One can't help but notice that many religious structures were built here which is indicative of the fact that this is now considered to be the imperial capital of the Eastern Roman Empire. While this period is considered to be the golden age of the Byzantine Empire, the city has undergone many changes over the years. With a multicultural population that lives here today, it is safe to say that this city is still alive and well. Many individuals and tourists visit this place each year to see if the people's feeling of nostalgia and a desire to keep the legacy of the ancient city alive is still very strong. Even though it is mo dern and there are businesses here, people still see it as a part of history. This city was once an imperial capital and as such, these are the kinds of architectures that one would expect to see in an imperial capital. The historical importance of the city does not stop with just architectural relics alone. These people still remain resolute in their desire to honor the memory of those that once ruled this empire.
